The Merseyside Tramway Preservation Society (MTPS) was formed in 1960: three years after the last tram operated in the city. Its initial objective was the preservation and restoration of Liverpool 'bogie streamliner' tram 869, which is now part of the operational fleet at the National Tramway Museum in Crich, Derbyshire.
During the intervening years, the activities of the MTPS developed and it was successful in acquiring the remains of other local trams and in restoring them to working order - including an older type of electric tram and a horse-drawn example from Liverpool, and an open-top electric tram from the Birkenhead fleet. Appropriate artefacts have also been obtained, and a number of publications sponsored. The MTPS is also currently a key player in the operation of the heritage tramway linking with the Woodside Ferry in Birkenhead.
The Wavertree Society's meeting on 15th March will feature original cine film of Liverpool trams in action, together with a slide presentation. MTPS members Ron Martin and Keith Carmichael will outline both their restoration progress to date and future aspirations. On sale will be a number of MTPS publications and videos of local transport interest - all proceeds being of direct benefit to tramcar restoration.
