NEWS FROM THE WAVERTREE SOCIETY (May 2001)

Our next meeting:
THE MOLE OF EDGE HILL
Wednesday 23rd May, 7.30 p.m.,
at Wavertree Library, Picton Road

The Williamson Tunnels are a labyrinth of tunnels and caverns under the Edge Hill district of Liverpool. They were built in the first few decades of the nineteenth century under the control of a retired tobacco merchant called Joseph Williamson. The purpose of their construction was to give jobs to unemployed men.

Although some of the tunnels have been lost over the years, a lot of them still exist today, under what is now a residential area. The Friends of Williamson's Tunnels, founded in 1996, is a voluntary organisation which is trying to get the tunnels renovated and opened to the public.

On Wednesday 23rd May, some of the Friends will be giving us a presentation on their work - including some of their most recent discoveries - and on the history of the tunnels. They will also explain how you can visit this underground curiosity on our doorstep.

ALL INTERESTED ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND.
The meeting takes place at Wavertree Library, Picton Road,
Liverpool 15, starting at 7.30 p.m.
