Prof. Bradshaw has lived in Liverpool for 35 years - for 20 years he was Professor of Botany at Liverpool University - and he is a well known source of ideas about how we should take care of city green space. He regards the Botanic Gardens in Edge Lane as 'an overlooked jewel within Liverpool, and a piece of garden history unmatched elsewhere in Britain'.
Though retaining their mid-19th century Curator's Lodge in an elegant classical style, the gardens have been allowed to fall into decay. After the last war, in fact, they nearly got turned into a training area for motorcyclists. Now they are very much the concern of Kensington Regeneration, and a working group has been set up to work out what should be done.
