NEWS FROM THE WAVERTREE SOCIETY (Sept.2003):

END OF AN ERA

We are sorry to report that one of the country's most historic pillar boxes - the 1865 'First National Standard' model on the corner of Sandown Lane and Long Lane, Wavertree - was destroyed by vandals on 3rd September. An explosion occurred around midnight - apparently caused by fireworks dropped inside - following similar attacks the same evening on boxes in Walton and Penny Lane.

Twenty years ago we were told by the Royal Mail that this was one of only four surviving examples of its type. Now we wonder whether any at all are left.
