THE ROSE GARDEN REVITALISED

In 1979 the Wavertree Society won a prize in the Merseyside Improved Neighbourhood competition, which invited community groups to suggest ways of improving neglected sites. Our suggestion was the landscaping of the derelict piece of land between Rose Cottage and the Rose Vaults pub, on the High Street - so, with the help of the prize money donated by Merseyside Improved Houses, the Rose Garden was born. Now, 25 years on, the City Council has repaired the commemorative plaque, re-planted the borders and created a new circular rose-bed near the front of the garden. This work has been carried out by contractors in conjunction with the children of Our Lady of Good Help primary school. Further work - including bulb planting by local children - is planned for the autumn.

AN ORIENTAL PUZZLE PICTURE
While gathering material for the forthcoming book of Wavertree Archive Photographs, we came across this postcard. The caption reads: 'Oriental Fete Wavertree - 13th Sept 1905. Arnold C Storey (Photo). Hull'. We would like to find out exactly where - and why - this event took place. If you recognise the picture, can identify the location or have any other information,
please let us know
