THE STORY OF
THE 'MIMOSA'

A talk by Dr D. Ben Rees
on Wednesday 31st January at 7.30 pm
in the Olive Mount Community Centre, L15

The Mimosa was a clipper ship which sailed from Liverpool in May 1865 to Patagonia, South America, with a group of Welsh settlers. They landed on 28th July 1865 and named their landing site Porth Madryn (now Puerto Madryn). It was a voyage of faith - an adventure to start a new Utopian community where Welsh would be the sole language of communication. 156 brave souls faced an 8,000 mile journey because of the propaganda of half a dozen Liverpool Welsh patriots. It is an incredible story which still stirs passion. Having landed in Patagonia and begun to farm in the Chubut Valley, the settlers had to contend with drought and flooding, and there were times when the enterprise seemed doomed. Despite this, further ships brought more emigrants from Wales - and, with encouragement from both the Argentine and British governments, the colony has survived to the present day.
