The Blue Coat School at 300
The Liverpool Blue Coat School celebrates its 300th birthday in 2008. Originally situated in School Lane, Liverpool, it moved to Wavertree in 1906. The old building in the city centre became an Arts Centre, and has recently undergone a multi-million pound refurbishment. The Grade II* listed Edwardian buildings in Church Road, Wavertree have also been refurbished and will be the main setting for the School's tricentenary celebrations.
Highlights of the year include a weekend gathering of former pupils, organised by the Liverpool Blue Coat Brotherly Society (the 'Old Blues' Association) from 20th to 22nd June. The Brotherly Society has also published the Tricentenary Trilogy: a set of three books describing life at the school during the 1920s, 1950s and 1970s. These are 'A Blue Coat Boy in the 1920s' by the late Danny Ross, 'Memories from the Mid-20th Century' by Frank Irwin, and 'Return to the Blue Coat' by Tony Salmon & Alan Gleave.
The Wavertree Society hopes to assist the Liverpool Blue Coat School Foundation in promoting a series of concerts and other events in the School's magnificent Chapel and Board Room, to celebrate both the School's tricentenary and Liverpool's year as European Capital of Culture.
