Heritage Open Day in Wavertree this year is bigger than ever! On SUNDAY 19th SEPTEMBER no fewer than FIVE local buildings will be open to visitors, free of charge. These are (in geographical sequence):
1. The Board Room and Chapel of the LIVERPOOL BLUE COAT SCHOOL, Church Road L15 (12 noon - 4pm)
2. HOLY TRINITY CHURCH, Church Road L15 (12 noon - 5pm)
3. WAVERTREE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH, Hunters Lane L15 (12.30-4.30pm)
4. WAVERTREE LOCK-UP, Childwall Road/Lake Road L15 (12 noon-4pm)
5. WAVERTREE GARDEN SUBURB INSTITUTE, Thingwall Road L15 (12 noon-4pm)

For the 17th year in succession, we shall be opening the Lock-up (built in 1796) to visitors. Following the success of last year's event, the Congregational Church (1839) in Hunters Lane will again be open, joining the other local 'regulars' which are Holy Trinity Church (1794) and the Blue Coat School (1906).

NEW FOR 2010 is the WAVERTREE GARDEN SUBURB INSTITUTE (1912) in Thingwall Road. We are particularly pleased that the 'Inny' is participating in the Heritage Open Days scheme, as 2010 marks the centenary of the Garden Suburb and the building has been the centre of its social life for almost the whole of that period. Converted out of two sandstone cottages - old farm buildings originally dating from the 18th century - it was at first referred to as the 'temporary Club House' as a purpose-built Garden Suburb Institute was planned for Queens Drive. But it has remained in use, and will be celebrating its own centenary in two years time. On 19th September it will be open to visitors, free of charge, from 12 till 4. Inside will be a historical display including memorabilia relating to the Music & Drama Club, which continues to flourish.

DIRECTIONS: The Institute is the sandstone building situated on the north side of Thingwall Road, L15 7JX, between Wavertree Nook Road and Fieldway. On-street parking is available outside. If you are visiting the Lock-up first, the Institute is a 10 minute walk away, along Childwall Road and Thingwall Road. (Or, if you have more time to spare, our book 'Discovering Historic Wavertree' will take you on a self-guided journey between the two venues). Alternatively there is the 168 bus, which runs every 30 minutes on a Sunday.
