NEWS FROM THE WAVERTREE SOCIETY (July 2011):

Our next meeting:
THE CUNARD YANKS
'They sailed from Liverpool ...
and brought home the world'

A talk and film show on Wednesday 13th July at 7.30pm in the Olive Mount Community Centre, Edgewell Drive, Liverpool L15 8GG

The Cunard Yanks were the thousands of young men who staffed the transatlantic liners in the 1950s; for example as stewards, chefs, waiters, pantrymen and laundrymen. Four of them - Richie Barton, John Gilmour, Billy Harrison and John Hibbert - got together a few years ago to record their exploits at sea and on land during that momentous era, which saw the latest New York music, fashions and ideas imported into Liverpool. We shall be seeing the results, in the form of a film showing life on both sides of the Atlantic, and meeting some of the 'lads' themselves who will no doubt be happy to elaborate further on their adventures.
