94-96 HIGH STREET PLANS

A planning application (ref. 11F/0119) has been submitted to convert the building 94-96 High Street (described on the application form as 'Lennons Bar' but better known as 'J P Merryweathers') into 6 residential apartments, with 3 new-build terraced dwellings at the rear. The drawings show a 'Georgian style' façade, the idea being to create the appearance of a double-fronted detached residence. The closing date for comments on the planning application is 23rd February. We have written to the Planning Department expressing our support for the scheme.

OUR LADY'S CHURCH TO CLOSE

Our Lady of Good Help Church, in Chesnut Grove, was opened in 1887 to serve the growing Roman Catholic population of Wavertree, which until that time had been served by St Oswald's at Old Swan. Now, the church authorities have announced that it is to close down in April, and the congregation will have to travel to Christ the King on Queens Drive. Our Lady of Good Help is not a listed building, but it is situated within the Wavertree Village Conservation Area so planning permission will be needed before any demolition takes place. At present, however, the future of the redundant building is uncertain.
