A lot has happened since July 2011 when we reported that Wavertree Town Hall had been sold at auction to local developers the T J Thomas Estates Group. The firm has kept us fully informed of their intentions, and they have now submitted a listed building consent application (ref. 11L/2923) and a planning application (ref. 11F/2932) to Liverpool City Council. Recognising the importance of the Town Hall as a key feature of the Wavertree Village Conservation Area, the owners commissioned the heritage consultant Peter de Figueiredo to advise them on the future of the building.

This is what the owners have told us:

"The days of such large licensed premises have gone, so we need to examine other options. We have discussed the possibility of converting the 'stables' (at the rear) into a mews type development of cottages - opening up the frontage and introducing some contemporary glazing - which was felt to be achievable as nothing is original in this area. The discussion then moved on to the ballroom area. We have had a number of interested parties looking at the pub part of the building, but no-one is interested in the two large function rooms to the first floor. So a discussion has been held regarding the potential of subdividing the first-floor ballroom into residential duplex apartments. The main body of the building is envisaged as remaining as a licensed unit, though we have had enquiries from some other users which may be interesting. In the meantime we are cracking on with repairs - the dry rot being much more extensive than envisaged, as is oft the way with old buildings".
