NEWS FROM THE WAVERTREE SOCIETY (May 2013):

Our next meeting:
THE WELSH BUILDERS
OF LIVERPOOL

An illustrated talk by Dr Ben Rees
and Dr John Williams
at Bethel Chapel, Heathfield Road, Liverpool L15 9EZ
on Wednesday 5th June at 7.30 p.m.

For our next meeting we are visiting a new venue: the community hall of Bethel Welsh Chapel, the entrance to which is in Auckland Road. Following the demolition of the original church in 2011, the former vestry and Sunday School building has been converted into a new chapel and meeting room. This is a joint event with the chapel's own Literary Society. Rev. Ben Rees is well-known to us. He has been a Presbyterian Church of Wales minister for 50 years, and most of that time has been spent here at Heathfield Road. He has published books about the Welsh influence on Merseyside life, and in this talk he will be concentrating on one of the most visible aspects: the Victorian terraced streets of Liverpool, many of which have stories to tell about young men who came from the farms and villages of North Wales to earn a living in the building trade.

ALL ARE WELCOME to attend
Refreshments will be provided by members of the Bethel Chapel congregation. Admission is free of charge (Donations invited). Disabled access is available.

This (above) is NOT a location map of the talk venue! It shows the streets off County Road in Walton, the initial letters of which spell out the names OWEN AND WILLIAM OWEN ELIAS, the Welsh father-and-son team responsible for developing much of the area in the 19th century.
