JOHN JACKSON 1940-2013
We were sorry to hear of the death of John Jackson, after a long illness, in early April. John was one of our most active Committee members, and also a stalwart of the Friends of the Wavertree Rose Garden. Born in Stanford-le-Hope in Essex, John emigrated to New Zealand with his family as a child, but later became an 'adopted Scouser' having married Sheila and settled in Liverpool. As a Chief Marine Engineer he travelled on ships all over the world, but after his retirement from the sea he gave a lot of time to the Wavertree Society and other community ventures. Our condolences go to Sheila (herself a former Hon.Secretary of the Society) and to the rest of John's family.

Our Summer Social evening:
A VISIT TO THE NORDIC CHURCH
on Tuesday 18th June
There have been Scandinavian communities in Liverpool for over 100 years, associated with the maritime trade of the port and, during World War 2, the involvement of Norwegian sailors in the Battle of the Atlantic. What is now known as the Liverpool International Nordic Community church at 138 Park Lane, Liverpool L1 8HG, was originally built in 1884 as the Swedish Seamen's Church: Gustaf Adolf Kyrka.

It is a fascinating building with a fascinating history; and on Tuesday 18th June we are being invited to visit the church, hear a talk by Stan Royden about Liverpool's Scandinavian links, and enjoy Scandinavian hospitality in the shape of coffee, cake and an open sandwich! For catering purposes we need to know exact numbers (upper limit 50) so this will be an 'all ticket' event. Tickets - priced at £6 a head - will be on sale at our meeting on 5th June.

We are describing this as a 'summer social' evening, and it is restricted to Wavertree Society members only. The visit begins at 7 p.m., but will be preceded by an (optional) guided walk from the Liverpool One Bus Station (meet at the Sailors Home gates, Paradise Street, in time for a 6.30 start). For those not using public transport, the church has its own car park. Please note that - unfortunately - there are no facilities for disabled access, and the building incorporates a number of steps between the different floors.
