In our last Newsletter, we mentioned that the owners of the lease of the former Manweb playing fields are proposing to create a three-acre 'village green' on part of the land, funded by the sale of eight acres for residential development. Meanwhile the Olive Branch Wavertree Residents Association (OBWRA) is continuing its campaign to bring the land into community ownership and use. At our A.G.M. on 20th October we heard from members of OBWRA about their plans, and subsequently the Wavertree Society's Committee gave detailed consideration to the various options. As a result of these discussions we issued a Statement on 8th December 2013.

We have been asked about a football ground known as Woodcroft Park, which in 1892 was the home of the Liverpool Caledonian AFC. The ground was described as "close to Wavertree Station ...  The covered grandstand holds 1,000 persons, and the uncovered grandstand 2,000, while altogether 30,000 spectators can be accommodated".

The club was, apparently, one of the 'big four' in Liverpool at the time - and only just missed out on election to the Football League. Can anyone tell us exactly where the football ground was situated? Do any memorabilia of the club survive? Please contact us if you can help.
