OLIVE MOUNT SPORTS GROUND:
OUR CURRENT POSITION

In our last Newsletter, we mentioned that the owners of the lease of the former Manweb playing fields are proposing to create a three-acre 'village green' on part of the land, funded by the sale of eight acres for residential development. Meanwhile the Olive Branch Wavertree Residents Association (OBWRA) is continuing its campaign to bring the land into community ownership and use. At our A.G.M. on 20th October we heard from members of OBWRA about their plans, and subsequently the Wavertree Society's Committee gave detailed consideration to the various options. As a result of these discussions we issued a Statement on 8th December 2013.

LIVERPOOL CALEDONIANS:
Information Wanted

We have been asked about a football ground known as Woodcroft Park, which in 1892 was the home of the Liverpool Caledonian AFC. The ground was described as "close to Wavertree Station ...  The covered grandstand holds 1,000 persons, and the uncovered grandstand 2,000, while altogether 30,000 spectators can be accommodated".

The club was, apparently, one of the 'big four' in Liverpool at the time - and only just missed out on election to the Football League. Can anyone tell us exactly where the football ground was situated? Do any memorabilia of the club survive? Please contact us
if you can help.

WORLD WAR 1 AND WAVERTREE
2014 marks the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War. Later this year we hope to organise a visit to Holy Trinity Church which has a particularly fine, and unusual, war memorial.

We have also been asked for information about the Wellington Road Drill Hall (now converted to the Frontline Church). This was built in 1914, we understand, as a base for the Royal Army Medical Corps (87th Field Ambulance) and Royal Garrison Artillery (1st Lancashire Heavy Battery).

If you can help us with this enquiry - or have any other information about local links with the First World War - please contact us
.

You can read the Wavertree Society's statement on our December 2013 News Update
web page.

We also recommend that you read OBWRA Newsletter No.2 (October 2013), which can be downloaded from their website at olivebranchwavertreeresidents.org/the-latest-newsletter/

Details of how to join OBWRA are contained in that Newsletter, and can also be found at olivebranchwavertreeresidents.org/join-obwra-online/
