Between 1910 and 1915, 360 houses were built by Liverpool Garden Suburb Tenants Ltd, as part of a much larger planned development that was brought to a halt by the outbreak of the First World War. Why was Wavertree Nook chosen as the site for this experiment in community building - one of about 20 similar projects taking place in England and Wales at this time - and who were the people behind it? What was life like for the early residents? What jobs did they do? How did they spend their leisure time?

Mike Chitty will talk about the origins of the Garden Suburb and Co-partnership movements, and how their aims and ideals were applied in Liverpool. Geoff Cowen will talk about his own memories of Garden Suburb life in the 1950s and 60s, when the 'Inny' was still the focal point of community life, serving the purpose for which it had been intended when first opened in 1912. Geoff will also give us an insight into his decision to purchase Fieldway Green, earlier this year, as a way of saving another key feature of the Garden Suburb for posterity.
