One of the highlights of Heritage Open Day in Wavertree over the past few years has been the chance to visit the Art Deco interior of Dovedale Baptist Church (originally the 'Wavertree Baptist Church') in Dovedale Road. Sadly, this month sees the closure of the church after 112 years. It will be welcoming visitors on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th September; and on the Sunday at 3.30pm there will be a special - and final - service of celebration to which all are invited.
On Wednesday 12th September, Janet Ireland will be talking about the history of the church, and more generally about the history of the Baptist movement in Liverpool. Its roots were in Myrtle Street Baptist Chapel, where Hugh Stowell Brown was a well-known and formidable preacher. As the population of Merseyside grew, so churches were planted across the area - including the one at Dovedale Road. Janet will talk about the building's unusual architecture, and will also put it in the context of the social history of the surrounding area.
ALL WELCOME - Admission free - Donations invited
