Prof. John Ashton CBE is the author of 'Blinded by Corona: How the Pandemic Ruined Britain's Health and Wealth and What to Do About It'. In this critically-acclaimed book he covers the history of pandemics, the development of public health management, the spread of Covid-19 and, in particular, the UK Government's response.
In 1847 Dr William Henry Duncan was appointed as Liverpool's first Medical Officer of Health - the first such appointment in Britain. Since that time, Liverpool has experienced - and successfully tackled - a variety of epidemics and other public health emergencies. John Ashton - born in Woolton, and educated at Quarry Bank High School, Newcastle upon Tyne Medical School and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine - has upheld the tradition of Dr Duncan. He was Regional Director of Public Health for the North West for 13 years and Director of Public Health in Cumbria for 6 years. A long-standing Consultant Adviser to the World Health Organisation Healthy Cities Programme, John is a professor at the University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. He was awarded the CBE for services to the NHS in the millennium honours list in 2000. He is also a prominent author, broadcaster and campaigner for social justice.
