THE WELSH IN LIVERPOOL
by Rev. Dr D. Ben Rees
Liverpool was once described as the 'Capital of North Wales'. From the eighteenth century onwards, young men from the Principality came to work as paviours, bricklayers and joiners, and young women came to work as servants in the 'big houses' of the growing city. During the Victorian era, Liverpool's housebuilding industry was dominated by the Welsh, and Welsh chapels were established all over Merseyside. Dr Ben Rees, who is Minister of one of the few surviving chapels - 'Bethel' in Heathfield Road, Wavertree - has agreed to talk to us about the strong historic links between Wales and Liverpool. As many members will know, Dr Rees is an eloquent speaker, and an expert on many aspects of the city's history. The meeting takes place at the Independent Methodist Church in Long Lane, Liverpool L15 - a few yards from the Mill Lane junction - on Wednesday 19th June, starting at 7.30 p.m.
Independent Methodist Church Hall,
Long Lane, Wavertree, at 7.30 p.m.
