Our summer outing:
A TRIP TO STOCKPORT
on Saturday 6th July
Our chosen destination this year is Stockport. Not too far away, but with two unique visitor attractions which we are sure will be of interest to many of our members. Firstly there is the HAT WORKS, the UK's only museum dedicated to hat making, which currently features a very special exhibition: 'Royal Millinery'. On display are over 100 hats created for HM The Queen, HM The Queen Mother, HRH Princess Margaret and HRH The Princess Royal by 12 top milliners. Secondly, we shall be visiting the AIR RAID SHELTERS, a labyrinth of passages carved into Stockport's sandstone cliffs: the largest purpose-built Second World War underground shelters in the country. During the past five years they have been restored to give visitors the feel of wartime Britain, the sights and sounds of civilians 'surviving the Blitz'. In between, there will be plenty of time for lunch and for an exploration of the town centre.
Stockport is a fascinating place, with a traditional market alongside St Mary's Church (now incorporating a Heritage Centre) high above the modern Merseyway shopping precinct. Our coach will leave the Picton Clock (Lake Road) at 10.30 a.m., and return by about 5.30 p.m. The cost, inclusive of admission to the Hat Works and the Air Raid Shelters, will be £14, or £11.50 for concessions (OAPs, UB40s and Students).
