The future face of the Clock Tower corner?
In our last Newsletter we mentioned the plan to build a Georgian-style terrace on the 'Save' petrol station site, directly facing the Picton Clock. Since that time the design has been modified slightly, to preserve Jenkins' right of way alongside their funeral parlour in Church Road North. It now consists of 9 flats rather than the originally-proposed 11. Here (below) is an impression of the front elevation - kindly supplied by the architects, Larrosa Marshall & Associates of Liverpool.

Ffarwél i Capel Bethel?
We were sorry to hear that, owing to rising costs and a declining congregation, the Welsh Chapel at the bottom of Heathfield Road is proposed for demolition this summer, to make way for a new (and smaller) chapel on part of the site. The Minister, Rev. Dr D. Ben Rees - who spoke to us about the long history of the Welsh in Liverpool at a meeting last year - is producing a photographic souvenir of the old buildings, and is inviting people to order copies at the special pre-publication price of £10.
Cheques, payable to 'Eglwys Bethel', should be sent to him at 32 Garth Drive, Liverpool L18 6HW. The names of those who subscribe before 31st May 2003 will be printed in the book.

Mabel Lowe
We were recently very saddened to hear of the death, at the age of 96, of one of our oldest members. Mabel Lowe grew up in Lance Lane and lived in Wavertree all her life. She shared her memories with us on several occasions, the last time shortly before her death, and we are hoping to publish some of her Recollections of Wavertree in future Newsletters.
