NEWS FROM THE WAVERTREE SOCIETY (Feb.2003):

Our next meeting:
THE LIFE OF
WILLIAM GLADSTONE

A talk by Steve Binns

Thursday 20th February
Holy Trinity Church Hall

William Ewart Gladstone - four times Prime Minister in the reign of Queen Victoria - is one of Liverpool's most famous sons. He is commemorated by a plaque on his birthplace in Rodney Street and by a statue in St John's Gardens.
Steve Binns is Liverpool's Community Historian, well-known for his guided tours of the city's civic buildings and his broadcasts on Radio Merseyside. He will be talking to us on Thursday 20th February, starting at 7.30 pm, in the Holy Trinity Church Hall, Church Road (corner of Woolton Road), Liverpool 15.

THE BELLS ARE STILL RINGING . . .

"The Maghull Handbell Ringers concert on the 15th of December was an experience of sight and sound not to be missed. The music ranged from 13th century to modern day carols. Every tune was an orchestra in miniature, such was the range they covered. We were allowed to touch and play the bells: genuine 18th century originals which the ringers have lovingly renovated. We learnt so much and left with hearts and heads ringing. A really wonderful experience you must not miss when we ask them to come again."
We have Joyce Edwards to thank for the above review. Joyce is a former Chair of the Society whom we have recently been pleased to welcome back on to our Committee. The concert was, unfortunately, very poorly attended - largely, we feel sure, owing to the very short notice given to members in the run-up to Christmas - which is why we are hoping to invite the Ringers back to entertain us at a future date.
