NEWS FROM THE WAVERTREE SOCIETY (Sept.2004):

Our Next Meeting
LIVERPOOL'S
LINKS WITH THE
CONFEDERACY

A talk by Alan McClelland

Wednesday 15th September, 7.30 pm,
at the Farriers, Wavertree Town Hall

Alan McClelland has been a member of the Liverpool Nautical Research Society for almost 50 years. He has lectured at evening classes on a variety of shipping topics, but one of his main interests is the role Liverpool played in the civil war between the northern and southern states of America. He will not just talk about the procurement of warships like the 'Alabama', but will deal with the whole subject of blockade running, the impact on the cotton trade, and the attitudes of Liverpool shipowners and merchants towards the conflict.

This meeting will take place in the former Farriers Restaurant at the rear of Wavertree Town Hall (car park and level access available off Chesnut Grove).
