The year 2007 marks Liverpool's 800th birthday: King John having granted Letters Patent to establish the Borough of Liverpool in 1207.

In 1907 the School of History at Liverpool University took a leading part in the 700th birthday celebrations: Professor Ramsay Muir wrote a definitive History of Liverpool, and even dressed up as King John during the Pageant which took place in Wavertree Park, Edge Lane.

In 2007 the School of History again intends to play a leading role - though this time, we are told, it is unlikely that their Professor will don fancy dress! Another book will be published, with contributions from a selection of academics, aiming to 'reflect the character and culture of Liverpool'. The final chapter - Postwar Liverpool, city of change and challenge - will be written by Dr Jon Murden, who intends to base it on the memoirs of ordinary Liverpudlians. The new book will be published in 2007, which has been designated as Liverpool's 'Year of Heritage'.

Meanwhile, the Project Team are keen to receive comments and suggestions from individuals, community groups and Societies such as ours. On 21st April, therefore, Dr Jon Murden will be visiting us to talk about what they have in mind. The meeting will take place in the former Farriers' Restaurant building at the rear of Wavertree Town Hall (car park and level access available off Chesnut Grove) and will start at 7.30 pm.
