Volunteers from the Wavertree Society will, for the twelfth year running, be acting as stewards at the Lock-up on the old village green (Childwall Road/Mill Lane/Lake Road) close to the Picton Clock. We shall have a sales and information table outside - inside if wet! - and visitors will have an opportunity to view the interior of the octagonal building which has been a local landmark since 1796.

The Society will also be represented at the Wavertree Garden Suburb Institute in Thingwall Road (200 yds from Queens Drive, close to the junction with Fieldway) where users of the building - past and present - will be on hand to talk to visitors about its role in the community over the past 93 years. Converted from a pair of farm cottages to a 'temporary Club House' in 1912 - to serve the social and cultural needs of the new Liverpool Garden Suburb - the Institute is taking part in the Heritage Open Days scheme for the very first time this year. It served as a school in the 1920s, and an ARP base during the Second World War, but throughout its history it has been famous (locally, at least) as a venue for amateur dramatics and musical entertainment. The organisers are hoping for a steady stream of visitors between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Our Local History Secretary Mike Chitty will be leading a guided historical walk from the Garden Suburb Institute to the Lock-up, starting at 12 o'clock - and from the Lock-up to the Institute starting at 4 p.m.

The third Wavertree building open this year is the Church of Holy Trinity, in Church Road, where members of the congregation will be showing visitors round - and handing out questionnaires encouraging children to explore the church. Unlike the Lock-up and the Institute - which are open on Sunday ONLY - Holy Trinity will be welcoming visitors on both Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th September, between 12 noon and 5 p.m.
