One Morning in August …
at 9.10 a.m. on Wednesday 22nd August 2007, to be precise, part of the Lamb Inn collapsed. It is believed that the structure had been weakened by excavation work taking place on the adjacent land (the former Dingwall Autos site). The High Street was closed to traffic for several hours, while the rubble was cleared and the remainder of the building was made safe.

All that remained of the western wing of the building was the distinctive brick arch which originally gave access to the yard and stables at the back. Naturally we hope that the Lamb will be restored as soon as possible. It is a Grade II listed building, dating from  the 1850s, and the 'lost' wing contained an attractive and very substantial sandstone pediment. But we suspect that legal wrangles over who or what was responsible for the collapse may delay the rebuilding process.

Meanwhile we have been assured by the City Council's conservation officers that the materials have been salvaged by the owners, put on palettes and stored securely for re-use when the Lamb is rebuilt.
