SAN REMO STILL STANDING
On the evening of 19th March a fierce blaze destroyed the 1960s buildings of the former Wavertree Conservative Club in Church Road. The fire was attended by 8 appliances, and was described by the Fire Brigade as 'suspicious'. However, the adjacent Waverton building - the Edwardian house originally called 'San Remo' - escaped destruction, though its side wall was badly scorched. Members will be aware that a planning application to demolish all the buildings on the site, to make way for a sheltered housing block, was submitted last year but later withdrawn (Newsletters 170 and 171).

San Remo, seen here after the fire, was the home of William Morrison, the well-known Wavertree builder. It blends well with the adjacent Blue Coat School Chapel (for which Morrison was the contractor in 1906).
