Following the publication of the February 2011 Newsletter, we made contact with the owners of the Cock & Bottle - T J Thomas Estates - about their plans for the building, including the former 'smallest house in England' at 95 High Street. By this time an internal wall had been built, separating the new doorway and staircase from the ground floor of the pub and making it impossible to re-create the original façade of the house. The Council's Planning Department had apparently indicated that, in their view, the moving of the doorway does not affect the character of the Wavertree Village Conservation Area and, as the building is not Listed, the Council cannot insist on the new wall being removed. However, the owners agreed to our suggestion that a 'mirror image' of the house frontage should be created by inserting a dummy window to the left of the new door. They are now applying for planning permission on that basis, and we are pleased to say that they have also agreed to incorporate our plaque drawing attention to the building's former significance.
