WAVERTREE
GARDEN SUBURB
INSTITUTE
On 25th April we were represented at a consultation session, when users of the 'Inny' in Thingwall Road were interviewed by students from Liverpool University's Department of Civic Design. The University is helping the WGSI Committee draw up a bid for Lottery funding, to improve the facilities offered by the building - as well as the tennis courts and bowling green further along Thingwall Road - while retaining its unique character.
The Institute was opened in 1912 by Viscount Howick, who was a great supporter of the Co-partnership Garden Suburbs movement. Originally described as 'the temporary Club House' (the intention having been to construct a much larger purpose-built Institute on Queens Drive) it has now served as a local community centre for exactly 100 years. Long may it continue!
