NEWS FROM THE WAVERTREE SOCIETY (Aug.2013):

MORRIS DANCING RETURNS TO FIELDWAY

A few weeks ago we were contacted by the Mersey Morris Men, who had seen photographs of the 1913 Garden Suburb Summer Festival - held on the newly created Fieldway Green. The photographs - published in 2004 in our book 'Wavertree (Images of England)' - are reckoned to be the earliest pictorial record of Morris dancing in the Liverpool area. The Mersey Morris Men wanted to celebrate the centenary of the Green by dancing there this summer, and this event took place on Sunday 4th August.

The Morris Men gave impromptu tuition to some of the children and local residents who had come along to watch. Despite the arrival of the rain as the dancing got under way, a good time was had by all - and we hope to see the Mersey Morris Men back in Wavertree before too long. Meanwhile, they wonder whether any of the early residents of Wavertree Garden Suburb were involved in the founding of their predecessors, the Liverpool Morris Men, in the 1920s - and whether any other action photos survive from the early years. Please contact our Local History Secretary, Mike Chitty, if you have any information.
