NEWS FROM THE WAVERTREE SOCIETY (Mar.2015):

Our next meeting:
'I BELIEVE IN
YESTERDAY'
Modern History
and the Beatles

An illustrated talk by Dr Donna Jackson
on Wednesday 25th March at 7.30pm
in the Olive Mount Community Centre,
Edgewell Drive, Liverpool L15 8GG

Dr Donna Jackson earned her PhD from the University of Cambridge in 2002 and is now employed as a Senior Lecturer in Modern History by the University of Chester. Her research focuses upon American foreign policy towards the developing world during the Cold War - but in addition she has developed an interest in local heritage, and teaches a class at Chester that includes a six-week section on Beatles heritage in Liverpool.

The history, legacy and heritage of The Beatles forms a major part of the tourist industry in Liverpool and her talk will examine the group's legacy as presented at significant tourist destinations, including the Cavern, St Peter's Church Hall in Woolton, Penny Lane, and George Harrison's birthplace in Arnold Grove, Wavertree. All of these are considered 'must see' locations for the many Beatles fans who visit Liverpool, and the impact of tourism on these places will be discussed. Other key themes to be considered include issues of 'authenticity' and 'aura', and the way that Beatles history is presented and managed - at these sites in particular but also in Liverpool in general.
