NEWS FROM THE WAVERTREE SOCIETY (Jul.2015):

An illustrated talk by Brenda Murray
on Wednesday 22nd July at 7.30pm

in the Olive Mount Community Centre, Edgewell Drive, Liverpool L15 8GG

The Battle of Waterloo took place exactly 200 years ago. This talk is not about the battle, but about the place formerly known as Crosby Seabank which developed into a residential suburb of Liverpool during the 19th and 20th centuries. The enthusiasm following the 1815 victory led to the Seabank Hotel being renamed the Waterloo Hotel, which in turn gave its name to the settlement that grew up around it.

Brenda Murray is a former history teacher, now 91 years old, who is intensely proud of the heritage of Seaforth and Waterloo. She will tell us the story of Waterloo and the people who lived there, including Thomas Ismay (founder of the White Star Line) and other well-known figures. She will explain how the area has developed over the past 200 years, right up to the present day when Antony Gormley's 'iron men' are prominent local residents on the Mersey foreshore.
