NEWS FROM THE WAVERTREE SOCIETY (Mar.2017):

SAVING OUR
STREET NAMEPLATES

At last October's Annual General Meeting, one of our members asked about the cast-iron nameplates that have been a feature of many local streets since Victorian times. Several have been removed by the Council in recent years, to be replaced by the new 'low maintenance' plastic variety. Others have effectively been abandoned, and are rusting away on the walls of privately-owned buildings.

The member concerned was Margaret Turnbull, who was promptly co-opted on to our Committee. Margaret has now, on our behalf, successfully applied for a grant from the Institute of Historic Building Conservation towards the cost of materials. (The IHBC is celebrating 50 Years of Conservation Areas this year and wants to encourage local restoration projects such as this).

We hope that, over the coming months, some of the signs will be repainted by our volunteers. If you would like to help - or perhaps you have a particular interest in one of the signs - please let us know.
