CHANGES AT THE OLD POLICE STATION
In early August 2018, UPVC windows were installed on the ground floor of 63-69 High Street. Purpose-built in 1879 by the Lancashire County Constabulary, it closed down in 1967 and was subsequently used as business premises including a School of Dancing (1970s), Villa Rossa Restaurant (1980s), Cuffs Bar (1990s/2000s) and more recently as a Pound Pub. The new windows are out of keeping with the original multi-paned sash windows.
Although not a listed building, we - and many others, to judge from the numerous comments posted on Facebook - have always regarded this as one of the most characterful buildings within the Wavertree Village Conservation Area. A planning application (18F/1870) has recently been submitted to convert the building into a 9-bedroom HMO (House in Multiple Occupation) - but this application does not mention the new windows (for which planning permission will be needed). The City Council's Planning Enforcement Section is 'on the case', and hopefully will insist on their replacement by windows of a more appropriate design.
