GEORGE HARRISON REMEMBERED
25th February would have been George Harrison's 78th birthday. Born at 12 Arnold Grove in 1943, he is now regarded as one of Wavertree's most famous sons. In 'normal' times, the Beatles Magical Mystery Tour brings coachloads of visitors to Wavertree High Street every day. In anticipation of the 20th anniversary of George's untimely death - which was on 29th November 2001 - a group of interested individuals has begun to plan an exhibition highlighting his links with Wavertree. (A high proportion of respondents to a LoveWavertree survey felt that not enough is made of the area's Beatles connections).
The intention is to have a window display at the ReLoved community shop (203 Picton Road) from 19th-28th February. Anyone with memories of the Harrison family - who left Wavertree for a new Council house in Speke in 1949 - is invited to deliver them to the shop during this period, along with any other material (e.g. memorabilia of Arnold Grove in the 1940s and 50s) that might be suitable for inclusion in the November exhibition.
The team is also keen to liaise with the present-day residents of the Arnold Grove area, to find out how they view 'Beatles tourism' and to gather ideas on how it could be developed (or better managed). If you are able to help, please let us know and we'll put you in touch - or drop a note into the ReLoved shop with your contact details and/or ideas.
