What is known about Liverpool Caledonians?
1. The club was formed in 1891 - apparently aiming to attract players and supporters of Scottish descent. (On 9 Dec 1892 an advertisement in the Liverpool Mercury advertised a match against Northwich Victoria FC: "Scotchmen. Come and see your countrymen gain a great victory"!).
2. On 16 Jun 1891 the Committee members of the club signed a five year lease (to run from 24th June), at a yearly rent of £25. The land was described as "All that piece or parcel of land containing 6 acres, 1 rood more or less, situate in the Township of Wavertree, in the County of Lancaster, being part of an estate known as the Woodcroft Estate, and shown on the plan drawn on the margin of the now reciting Indenture of Lease". (Sadly, this plan does not seem to have survived). The Lessors were "Charles William Tayleur, … Henry Stokes … and the Reverend William Sergeantson".
3. On 28 Sep 1891 the Liverpool Mercury reported: "The Liverpool Caledonians enter upon their career this evening, when they meet Everton on the Woodcroft Park Ground, Wavertree, the kick-off being announced for five o'clock. The Everton Executive and many well-known local football celebrities have signified their intention of patronising the opening proceedings …".
4. On 23 May 1892 the Liverpool Mercury reported that "Fair weather favoured the Liverpool Caledonian Football (Association) Club on Saturday afternoon, when the first annual athletic sports were held at Woodcroft Park, Wavertree. There was a large attendance, numbering in all some 4000. … The London and North-western Railway band provided a programme of music during the afternoon. Mrs Robert Kirkland distributed the prizes."
