5. On 10 Jun 1892, the Liverpool Mercury announced an offer of shares in "Liverpool Caledonians, Limited": "Under this title, a limited liability company has been formed for the purpose of taking over the grounds known as Woodcroft Park, now occupied by the Liverpool Caledonian Association Football Club. This club, it will be remembered, has been so successful during its first season that, besides being in the semi-final in the Liverpool Senior Cup Competition, it won the Liverpool Challenge Shield, and gained admission to the Lancashire League."
6. It would appear that the club had, in fact, been formed with the ambition of gaining Football League status. They applied to join the First Division in 1892 - a full year before Liverpool FC attempted - but sadly they were unsuccessful. According to a posting on the NonLeagueMatters football forum, thirteen teams had applied for twelve places, and the Caledonians were the unlucky team to miss out. As former Councillor Tim Beaumont said in 2015: "Who knows how history would've turned out had they been admitted to the football league? One side that was successful that day was a certain Newton Heath - better known these days as Manchester United."
7. In their first season they had won the Liverpool Senior Shield, and reached the semi-final of the Liverpool Senior Cup. They were then accepted into the Lancashire League, and played seven league games. They played in front of 2,500 (against Blackpool) and 5,000 (against Fairfield). Later in 1892 they got as far as the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup - one round further than Liverpool FC - before losing to Northwich Victoria.
8. Unfortunately, in commercial terms the venture was not a success. By the end of 1892 the company - "Caledonian Football Club, Limited" - was in liquidation. The Liverpool Mercury announced, on 22 Dec 1892: "The Liquidator is prepared to receive Offers for his Interest in the Land and Erections at Woodcroft Park, Wavertree. Offers to be sent in not later than the 28th instant".
