The Wavertree Society has published a Calendar for 2020 featuring the paintings of Desmond Ross. We feel privileged that Desmond has allowed us to make use of his artwork. For many years now, Desmond has been capturing Wavertree scenes in a very colourful and distinctive style of his own. Occasionally his paintings have been on display at local venues such as his own St Bridget's Church, and some of them have been offered for sale as limited-edition prints. For the past two years he has produced an A3-size calendar, largely for distribution to his friends. It is the latest of these that, for convenience of hanging and posting, we have reduced to A4 size and had printed for wider circulation.

Desmond Ross was born in Garston in 1931, and left school at the age of 14. After serving as an apprenticeship as a poster- and sign-writer, he set up his own business in this field. Some of his paintings feature posters that he remembers creating in the 1950s! It was in 1956 that he married and moved to Wavertree, and it is a desire to record the social history of our area that has been his main inspiration.

The 2020 Calendar features a wide range of Wavertree scenes, including Piggymuck Square (above), Bishopgate Street, the Mystery, the Monks' Well, Salisbury Terrace, the Cambridge Street Mission and Holy Trinity Church. It is available, price £4.50, at Wavertree Society events - including the Annual General Meeting on Sunday 20th October - or to personal callers at the Prince Alfred pub (77 Wavertree High Street) and Papa's Café Bistro (270 Picton Road).
