NEWS FROM THE WAVERTREE SOCIETY (Jan.2020):

STREET LIGHTING IN WAVERTREE GARDEN SUBURB
The city-wide installation of LED street lights - designed to save on energy costs - has resulted in various problems. Poor or patchy illumination, especially for pedestrians, is one of the most common complaints, especially in areas like Wavertree Garden Suburb which has lots of roadside trees. The incongruous appearance of the new LED fittings on old concrete or cast-iron posts has also been commented on by many.

The Fieldway Residents Association has been trying to find a solution that would both improve the quality of the lighting at night and reduce the visual impact of the lamps during the daytime. We agree with them that black, rather than bare metal, lamp-posts would be more appropriate within the Wavertree Garden Suburb Conservation Area (and, indeed, other conservation areas across the city). However, so far the response of Council officers has been that the available funds do not permit even the painting of the standard steel posts which are currently proposed.
